Tottenham experienced their first game without Harry Kane with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday. The match showcased a lively first half, giving fans a glimpse of what Tottenham’s playing style will be like under new manager Ange Postecoglou, who will have to navigate the team without their star striker. Despite dominating possession and scoring from their only two shots on target in the first half, Tottenham found themselves trailing 2-1 due to defensive lapses. Postecoglou’s tactics were in stark contrast to the previous manager’s focus on defensive rigidity and counterattacks.

Although neither team could secure a victory in the second half, a draw against Brentford can be seen as a positive start for Postecoglou, especially considering Brentford’s impressive home record against top teams last season. Tottenham took the lead in the 11th minute through a headed goal by Cristian Romero from a precise free kick by James Maddison. However, Romero had to be substituted due to a possible concussion after a collision earlier in the game. Brentford equalized from a penalty awarded for a minor contact between Son Heung-min and Mathias Jensen, with Bryan Mbeumo converting the spot-kick. Tottenham’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed again in the 36th minute when Yoane Wissa scored with a deflected shot from a cross by Rico Henry. Just before halftime, Emerson Royal leveled the score for Tottenham with a powerful shot from outside the box, assisted by Maddison.

Richarlison, who has the responsibility of filling Kane’s shoes, had a relatively quiet game but managed to force a save from Brentford’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken in the second half. Flekken started in place of David Raya, who is expected to join Arsenal. Overall, Tottenham’s performance without Kane showed promise, and it will be interesting to see how Postecoglou continues to shape the team in the future..
