A 40-year-old man was allegedly killed in Assam’s Hojai district on suspicion of cattle theft. Police have arrested six individuals and are conducting further investigations. The incident occurred in Bamungaon village, where the victim, Hifzur Rahman, was caught stealing buffalos. An individual, aged 40, was reportedly subjected to fatal assault on suspicion of cattle theft in the Hojai district of Assam on Saturday night. Subsequently, the police apprehended six individuals and are currently conducting further investigations into the matter.

The incident occurred in the Bamungaon area of Lanka, Hojai, around midnight on Saturday, as stated by the police. Upon receiving information at approximately 2:40 am on Sunday, authorities swiftly responded to the scene.

The victim, who was found unconscious, was promptly transported to a nearby hospital by the police. At the time, medical professionals confirmed that the victim was still alive; however, he later succumbed to his injuries. The police subsequently sent his body for post-mortem examination on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Hifzur Rahman, a resident of Bamungaon village. According to local accounts, he was apprehended in the act of attempting to steal two buffalos from a residence at midnight on Saturday.

“Due to numerous incidents of cattle theft in our area recently, we have been vigilant at night. Yesterday, he was caught in the act, and some individuals began assaulting him in the darkness,” a local resident revealed.

Following Hifzur’s demise, his family lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday, prompting an investigation into the matter.

When contacted by HT, Saurabh Gupta, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Hojai district, claimed to be unaware of the incident.

After the death of Hifzur, the police revisited Bamungaon village and identified eight individuals believed to be responsible for the fatal assault. Subsequently, six of them, namely Sanjay Das, Nikhil Das, Tulendra Das, Uttam Chakraborty, Jayanta Chakraborty, and Sandhu Mazumdar, were apprehended.

The individuals mentioned above have been charged under section 302 (murder) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to sources familiar with the matter.
