In a press conference held at the Harold R. Banke Justine Center in Jonesboro, Clayton County District Attorney Tasha Mosley announced that there would not be a second grand jury in the case of the officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Eric Holmes. Former Clayton County Police Officer Justin Stephens faced seven charges related to the shooting, but a Clayton County grand jury returned a no-bill in the case earlier this year. Mosley stated that after reviewing the case, no new significant evidence was found that would justify pursuing a second grand jury. Therefore, she concluded that the case is officially closed. Holmes’ mother, Vakelvion Holmes, along with other family members and supporters, attended the press conference. Vakelvion Holmes expressed her disappointment, saying that her son did not deserve to die and questioned Stephens’ suitability as a police officer. Mosley presented body cam footage during the conference, but only played the audio portion where Stephens was attempting to revive Holmes. The District Attorney stated that additional evidence, including police reports and videos, was obtained but deemed unrelated to Stephens’ actions and would only disparage the character of Mr. Holmes. Vakelvion Holmes revealed that she had not watched the video of her son’s death and expressed her intention to pursue a civil case. Eric Holmes, who left behind a four-year-old son, was described by his mother as a great person who enjoyed working on cars..
