Deputy Howard of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office is being praised for his quick thinking and bravery after he put his patrol car in between a wrong-way driver and oncoming traffic on the Sam Houston Tollway. Although the deputy was not seriously injured, the driver is expected to be charged with intoxication assault against a peace officer. “We applaud Deputy Howard for his brave action in protecting the residents of Harris County from imminent danger,” stated Sheriff Gonzalez in a tweet. The quick thinking of a deputy from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office potentially prevented a tragedy on Friday night. According to Sheriff Gonzalez, Deputy Howard spotted a vehicle driving in the wrong direction on the Sam Houston Tollway and made the bold decision to position his patrol car between the oncoming traffic and the errant vehicle. Although Deputy Howard sustained minor injuries when the wrong-way driver collided with his vehicle, he was taken to a clinic for precautionary measures. The driver, who has two prior convictions for driving under the influence, was also injured and is expected to face charges of intoxication assault against a peace officer.
