A Racine mother, Dashja Turner, has been charged with five felony counts of neglecting a child (consequence is great bodily harm) after her five children were discovered severely malnourished and neglected in a basement. The children, aged 14, 8, 7, 2, and 14 months, were found by Racine police on July 31 during a welfare check. According to a criminal complaint, Turner and her boyfriend were staying in the unfinished basement with the children, who were found lying on a single air mattress with no pillows or blankets. The basement had minimal lighting, one window covered in purple paint, and lacked basic amenities such as a bathroom and food. The children appeared frail, lethargic, and had not been properly cared for, with stained clothes, matted hair, and extremely long fingernails. Social workers took custody of the children and transported them to the hospital due to their severe malnourishment and neglect. Medical consultations confirmed signs of physical abuse. Turner, who claimed to have been living in the home for a month, stated that she cleaned the children with soapy water from a bucket and provided them with basic meals, although no evidence of food was found in the home. The complaint also revealed that welfare checks had been called in multiple times for the children in the past. If convicted, Turner could face up to 60 years in prison and a $125,000 fine. She is scheduled to appear in court on August 16 for a preliminary hearing.
