Three individuals tragically lost their lives on Wednesday after accidentally falling into a deep hole located in a cornfield in Texas. The incident unfolded when authorities from the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call around 1 a.m. The report indicated that a group of four individuals had been engaged in hog hunting with their dogs when the incident occurred.

According to the sheriff’s office, one of the dogs inadvertently fell into a cistern that was used to collect rainwater, which had also become filled with the highly hazardous hydrogen sulfide gas. In an attempt to rescue the dog, one member of the hunting party descended into the cistern, prompting two others to follow suit in an effort to save the initial rescuer. Meanwhile, a fourth member of the group rushed to their truck to seek assistance and contact emergency services.

Tragically, the water level in the cistern was situated eight feet below the ground, rendering it impossible for any of the individuals or the dog to reach the opening. Consequently, all three individuals and the canine were fatally poisoned by the toxic gas.

The deceased victims were identified as Delvys Garcia (37), Denise Martinez (26), and Noel Vigil-Benitez (45). Hailing from Florida, they had been visiting a friend in Red Rock, Texas at the time of the incident. Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook expressed his condolences during a press conference, remarking on the sorrowful outcome of the hunting accident. He emphasized the devastating impact on the families, highlighting the tragedy of loved ones coming to Texas for a hunting trip only to meet such a grim fate.

The bodies of the three victims, as well as the dog, were recovered later that evening at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the clearance of water and fumes from the cistern. A deputy, equipped with protective gear, was lowered into the hole for the retrieval process.

Sheriff Cook noted that the investigation was still ongoing and required verification of the hunting story..
