In response to this devastating event, other law enforcement agencies in the Kansas City area are stepping in to offer assistance, including taking on patrol shifts. Officer Jonah Oswald, who had been with the Fairway Police Department for four years, lost his life during the exchange of gunfire, which occurred at a QuikTrip in neighboring Mission during the pursuit of suspects involved in an auto theft. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas City Police, and the Kansas City, Kansas Police, are among the agencies providing support. Sgt. Jesse Valdez of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of the law enforcement community coming together to help one another during times like this, ensuring that the city of Fairway remains safe and protected. Valdez stated that the deputies will continue to handle calls for service on behalf of the Fairway Police Department until the officers feel ready to return to work. The investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Johnson County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team. Limited details have been released about the shooting, and the team is responsible for handling cases involving the use of deadly force. The incident began with a police chase initiated by Lenexa police, which ended at the QuikTrip in Mission. Oswald and officers from multiple agencies responded to apprehend the suspects, resulting in the fatal exchange of gunfire. The male suspect, Shannon Wayne Marshall, was killed, while the female suspect, Andrea Rene Cothran, was arrested and is facing charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and theft. The Fairway Police Chief, J.P. Thurlo, expressed his grief over the loss of Officer Oswald, describing him as a warm-hearted individual whose dedication and hard work had a positive impact on many lives. Oswald leaves behind a wife and two young children. This tragic event has deeply affected law enforcement across the Kansas City metro area, with Sgt.
