Pennsylvania prosecutors have reported that an elderly woman used a concealed 16-inch blade in a cane to allegedly kill a man who was involved in a fight with her son. The incident occurred on June 10 in Ardmore, near Philadelphia, and the suspect, Renee DiPietro, age 70, was apprehended by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. Lower Merion Township Police were alerted to a stabbing at the intersection of Cricket Avenue and Cricket Terrace at approximately 1:30 p.m. that day. When the officers arrived, they found the victim, Michael Sides, age 31, bleeding from the chest and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at Lankenau Medical Center the following day at 2:28 a.m.

According to a statement from the district attorney, a joint homicide investigation has been launched by Montgomery County Detectives and Lower Merion Police. The investigation revealed that there was a physical altercation earlier that evening at a nearby bar, during which a friend of the victim was punched by a man identified as Jason DiPietro. Following the altercation, the victim expressed his intention to confront Jason DiPietro for assaulting his friend.

Surveillance footage from a local business captured the events leading to Sides’ death. In the video, Jason DiPietro can be seen attempting to enter the back seat of a white Nissan sedan, occupied by his parents, Michael DiPietro and the accused, Renee DiPietro. The victim prevents Jason from entering the vehicle, leading to a physical altercation. Subsequently, Renee DiPietro exits the front passenger side of the car and approaches her son and the victim. It is alleged that DiPietro stabbed Sides with a 16-inch blade concealed within a cane.

Once Sides was on the ground, all three individuals got into the white Nissan and left the scene. The surveillance footage revealed that the license plate was bent upwards to obscure it and hinder later identification. Neither DiPietro nor anyone else in the car offered first aid to the victim or called 911 for assistance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 1,101 homicide deaths in Pennsylvania in 2021. An autopsy performed by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Sides died from a single stab wound to the chest, ruling his death as a homicide.

Renee DiPietro surrendered herself to face charges of third-degree murder, manslaughter, and possession of a crime instrumentality. Her bail was set at $50,000, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 22 at 1 p.m.
