An 18-year-old individual has been accused of involvement in the tragic death of a teenage girl in the East Isles neighborhood of Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Police Department received a report of a shooting at approximately 1:30 a.m. on July 17 near 25½ Street West and Girard Avenue South. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 15-year-old girl, identified as Ka’Maih Emauri Johnson, who had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance, Johnson tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

According to the charging documents submitted on Thursday, Antonio Lamar Brooks Jr., a resident of Bloomington, has now been charged with second-degree murder in relation to Johnson’s death. A witness informed investigators that she and Johnson had been driving around with three male individuals when Brooks contacted her via text message, requesting a meeting. Subsequently, Brooks arrived in a white SUV, and after a brief period of laughter and banter, he threatened to shoot everyone present.

The witness stated that she did not take Brooks’ threat seriously, as he had made similar comments in the past without following through on them. However, a gunshot was heard shortly thereafter, prompting the witness to exit the vehicle. Both the car she was in and the SUV quickly departed from the scene. Later, the boys informed her that Johnson had been shot and they believed she was receiving medical treatment at a hospital. They subsequently picked up the witness after Brooks had disposed of the gun and dropped her off at the hospital.

The complaint further reveals that Brooks expressed remorse to the witness for the shooting incident. However, he then proceeded to deactivate his Facebook account and block the witness’s phone number and other social media accounts. Three other individuals who were present in the vehicle with Johnson provided similar accounts of the events. One of them mentioned that Brooks appeared to be smiling and not visibly angry, while Johnson was laughing and running away when the gunshot was fired.

As of Thursday, Brooks had not been apprehended and was facing charges via a warrant. If convicted, he could potentially face a maximum prison sentence of 40 years..
