Tragically, both the father and son lost their lives when their expensive twin-engine Beechcraft Baron 58, valued at approximately $1.2 million, crashed in a forest between the Brazilian states of Rondonia and Mato Grosso on July 29.
Adding to the sorrow, the man’s wife, Ana Pridonik, took her own life just hours after her husband and stepson were laid to rest on August 1.
The man depicted in the video has been identified as Garon Maia, aged 42, and his son Francisco. Investigators are currently working to determine the extent to which the father’s actions contributed to the tragic incident. It remains unclear when the video was recorded, and authorities are attempting to establish whether the boy was actually piloting the plane at the time of the crash.
A tweet in Spanish from Radio Ñandutí provides additional details about the accident, confirming the identities of the victims as Garon Maia Filho and his 12-year-old son. The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered on Sunday morning.
The video footage shows Francisco taking control of the plane as it takes off from a dirt runway, with his father occupying the co-pilot’s seat and providing instructions. Maia can be heard saying, “Wait, everything ready? Nothing in front, okay. Come on, 600 horses, you can push. 600, Kiko, go,” as he guides his son. He instructs Francisco to keep his hand on the lever and monitor the speed as the plane ascends into the sky.
Shortly after, as the plane reaches cruising altitude, Maia is seen consuming a bottle of beer. According to crash investigators, Maia departed from his ranch in Nova Conquista and made a stop at an airport in Vilhena to refuel on July 29. His intention was to fly his son back to Campo Grande, Mato Grosso Do Sul, where Francisco lives with his mother and attends school, as reported by the Daily Mail.
