The incident occurred when deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the driver, Charles Rice, refused to stop. After a PIT maneuver, Rice ran from deputies and then pulled out a gun and shot at them. Deputies returned fire, resulting in Rice’s death. The GBI stated that Rice had active felony arrest warrants. A man tragically lost his life in a shooting incident involving a deputy from Walton County in Rockdale County late on Tuesday night, as reported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Multiple law enforcement agencies were present at the scene, with Channel 2’s Darryn Moore providing coverage for Channel 2 Action News This Morning. The incident unfolded when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 10:40 p.m. However, the driver, identified as 31-year-old Charles Rice, refused to comply and instead accelerated away from the deputies. Eventually, the deputies executed a PIT maneuver on Rice near 4300 Haralson Mill Road, which is in close proximity to the Walton County border.

Upon exiting his vehicle, Rice fled from the pursuing deputies. The GBI stated that Rice was subsequently tased by the deputies, but he managed to retrieve a firearm from his waistband and fired shots at them. In response, the deputies returned fire, fatally striking Rice. It is worth noting that Rice had active felony arrest warrants at the time of the incident, as confirmed by the GBI. Fortunately, a female passenger who was in Rice’s car during the chase and shooting escaped unharmed.

Upon completion, the case will be handed over to the Rockdale County District Attorney’s Office for thorough examination. Channel 2 Action News has made contact with law enforcement in order to gather further information regarding this ongoing investigation..
