One person was killed in a high-speed crash on Pineville-Matthews Road in Charlotte. The crash involved an Acura and an Infiniti, with the driver of the Infiniti identified as Gregory Joseph Rhoads. The passenger of the Acura, Sheronda La Shanetta Woody Wilson, died at the hospital. Rhoads was released from the hospital and later charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree murder. In Charlotte, North Carolina, a fatal collision occurred on Sunday night, resulting in the death of one individual, as confirmed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The incident took place at approximately 10:09 p.m. on Pineville-Matthews Road. Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered an Acura that had veered off the right side of the road, sustaining significant damage to the passenger side. Additionally, an Infiniti with severe front-end damage was found.
Tragically, Sheronda La Shanetta Woody Wilson, the passenger in the Acura, succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital. The initial investigation suggests that the driver of the Infiniti, Gregory Joseph Rhoads, was excessively speeding on Pineville-Matthews Road. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), an officer observed the speeding vehicle and activated emergency equipment in an attempt to apprehend and initiate a traffic stop.
However, just before the CMPD officer caught up to the Infiniti, it collided with the passenger side of the Acura, driven by Kenneth Devon Faison. The impact of the crash caused the Acura to slide off the roadway and into nearby brush. Faison, Rhoads, and an additional passenger in the Infiniti sustained serious injuries and were promptly transported to the hospital. Importantly, the CMPD officer was not engaged in a pursuit of Rhoads’ speeding vehicle at any point.
Both Faison and Rhoads underwent screening for impairment, and it was determined that neither was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident. Nevertheless, excessive speed, the failure to stop for a police vehicle, and running a red light are contributing factors in this tragic incident.
On August 7th, Rhoads was discharged from the hospital and subsequently placed under arrest on an involuntary manslaughter warrant, which had been obtained by detectives earlier that day. Subsequently, he faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and distribute, maintaining a place to keep a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
In response to the incident, the CMPD’s Internal Affairs Office conducted its own administrative investigation.
