Following the violent clashes between rival soccer fans in Athens on Monday, seven police officers have been relieved of their duties, including the head of the sub-directorate responsible for violence in sports grounds, announced Citizen Protection Minister Giannis Oikonomou on Tuesday.
The other six officers, who were stationed in Traffic Police departments along the route taken by a motorcade of 100-120 Dinamo Zagreb hooligans to Athens, where they clashed with supporters of the local club AEK, will be reassigned to lower-ranking positions. A 29-year-old man was fatally stabbed during the brawl.
“This incident will not only result in the removal and reassignment of these officers, as further investigations are underway into the incident itself and the response of the authorities,” stated Oikonomou.
