The injured man, identified as 51-year-old Lars Rudow from Watkinsville, was later arrested on charges including aggravated assault and driving under the influence (DUI). Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently conducting an inquiry into the shooting in Rabun County.
According to the GBI, they have initiated an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Clayton, Rabun County, Georgia. The Clayton Police Department requested the GBI’s involvement to ensure an impartial examination of the incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported from this particular confrontation.
Preliminary information reveals that on August 5, 2023, at approximately 11:15 p.m., officers from the Clayton Police Department and deputies from the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office were carrying out a traffic safety checkpoint near Hwy 76 West and Meadow Stream Lane. It was at this location that Lars Anton Rudow, aged 51 and a resident of Watkinsville, Georgia, stopped his vehicle before reaching the checkpoint. As a Clayton Police Officer approached Rudow’s car, he suddenly accelerated towards the officer, grazing the officer’s lower leg. Rudow then swiftly drove towards the other officers and deputies stationed at the checkpoint. In response, one of the Clayton Police Officers fired a single shot at the car. After a brief pursuit spanning less than a mile, Rudow veered off the road, resulting in a crash.
Subsequently, Rudow was apprehended and charged with DUI refusal as well as five counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. He was subsequently taken into custody at the Rabun County Detention Center.
The GBI will independently investigate the incident, and upon its completion, the case file will be forwarded to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
