The incident occurred at the Smith’s gas station in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Wilson had gone to confront a group of thieves who had stolen her car. Barela turned himself in to the authorities and now faces charges of murder, tampering with evidence, and unlawful possession of a handgun. He has been placed in the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center.
According to law enforcement officials, Sydney Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother, Diedra Wilson, described her as a kind and sweet woman. Wilson had tracked her stolen Hyundai to the gas station using her cell phone’s GPS. Witnesses reported that the car had been stolen three days prior to the shooting.
Upon encountering the group of teenagers in her stolen car at the gas station, Wilson got out of her vehicle to confront them. The driver of the stolen car attempted to flee and crashed into a black Mustang before hitting the curb. At that point, the teenagers, including Barela, fled the scene. It was during this confrontation that Barela pulled out a gun and shot Wilson.
Sydney Wilson’s family is now seeking justice for her death and is requesting the maximum sentence for Marcos Barela. They believe that Barela’s family should also be held accountable, as he is a minor and should not have had access to a gun. A candlelight vigil was held in honor of Sydney Wilson on August 4.
