The Stockton Police Department has released body camera footage of a sergeant being shot during a carjacking incident. The sergeant is said to be in stable condition after being shot in the chest, thanks to his bulletproof vest. The alleged shooter has been identified as Sunthawon Savon and is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder. The police are considering the possibility of a second shooter. The incident has raised questions about how Savon, who has previous charges, was able to be released. The police department is currently understaffed, with over 30 officers less than last year. shooting-stockton-sergeant/103-3d019a71-02df-4ef0-8208-5952fe5e2e64″ target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Devin Trubey reported

The Stockton Police Department has released body camera footage of the shooting of a sergeant, and they are not ruling out the possibility of a second shooter. The incident began with the carjacking of a 69-year-old man in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The footage shows the sergeant in pursuit of the suspect, stopping near an apartment complex and then shouting “shots fired” before notifying dispatch that he has been shot. Fortunately, the sergeant’s life was saved by his bulletproof vest, but both a pistol and rifle were used to fire bullets through the window and into his chest. The alleged shooter, identified as 20-year-old Sunthawon Savon, is now in custody and facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. While Savon has been charged, the police are not ruling out the possibility of a second person involved in the shooting. Savon has a history of charges related to manufacturing and selling multi-burst trigger activators and possessing assault weapons. The District Attorney’s office will be investigating how someone with these charges was able to be released and whether this could be considered a “second strike” that would result in harsher penalties. Five people were detained for questioning, but only Savon was charged. The Stockton Police Department is currently understaffed, with more than 30 officers fewer than last year. Despite this, the department has seen a decrease in shootings compared to the previous year, and their homicide unit has a 40% clearance rate. The injured sergeant expressed his desire to return to duty and even visited the carjacking victim in the hospital to inform him that his car had been recovered. Savon will have his arraignment on Friday at 1:30 p.m..
