Authorities in New Bedford, Massachusetts, are currently conducting an investigation into a potential homicide that occurred on Thursday night in the city’s South End. The incident was reported to the police at approximately 11:04 p.m. following a Shot Spotter alert indicating multiple gunshots in the vicinity of 123 County St. Numerous 911 calls were also made, reporting shots fired and a male victim near 116 County St., as stated in a media release by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office on Friday.

Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders discovered evidence of a shooting but no victim present. However, a short time later, a private vehicle arrived at Saint Luke’s Hospital, transporting the victim. Unfortunately, the victim, identified as 27-year-old Amareuito Fernandes from New Bedford, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:33 p.m.

The investigation into this case is currently in full swing, and the district attorney’s office has emphasized that no further details can be disclosed at this time. The New Bedford Police Department, along with Massachusetts State Police detectives from the District Attorney’s Office and Homicide Unit prosecutors, are actively involved in the ongoing investigation.

This incident marks the second fatal shooting in New Bedford this summer, following the tragic death of 20-year-old Lorenzo Gomes on July 2. Gomes was shot and killed while inside a vehicle near the intersection of Tallman and North Front streets..
