Hayes was swimming with his family in Lake Michigan after his shift when the incident occurred. The Chicago Fire Department has classified his death as an “off-duty accidental death of an active-duty member.” Funeral services for Hayes have been scheduled, and Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt has urged all members of the department to pay their respects and attend the service.
