The Attorney General’s Office in Trenton has revealed the identities of the individuals involved in a fatal incident that occurred in Elizabeth, N.J. on July 29, 2023. The deceased has been identified as Estiben Alegria-Hurtado, a 42-year-old resident of Elizabeth. The incident unfolded when police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting an unwelcome person at a residence on Amity Street. Officer Steven Lazo of the Elizabeth Police Department discharged his firearm at around 8:05 a.m. during an encounter with Mr. Hurtado, who was found in possession of a knife. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and medical personnel, Mr. Hurtado succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark on July 30 at 11:36 p.m. As mandated by law P.L. 2019, c. 1, the Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident, as is required for deaths occurring during interactions with law enforcement or while the individual is in custody. The findings of this investigation will be presented to a grand jury to determine if there is sufficient evidence to indict the involved officer or officers.
