Police Identify Woman Found dead in California Home After Nearly a Decade

Police have finally identified the woman who was found dead in a California home nearly a decade ago, along with the body of another person discovered inside a box under her kitchen table. The Monterey Police Department responded to the death of a woman named Francesca Linda Jacobs in February 2014. She died from starvation, according to authorities, and foul play was not suspected. However, during their investigation, police made a shocking discovery – the decomposed remains of another person in a box beneath the kitchen table.

Further investigation revealed that Jacobs had left a handwritten will, identifying the woman in the box as her mother, Florence Jacobs. This perplexing case, known as the “Mom-In-The-Box” case, took a bizarre turn when detectives found discrepancies in Francesca Jacobs’ identification. She appeared older than her driver’s license indicated, and her records only began in the 1990s, with very few records found for Florence Jacobs.

In late 2022, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office Cold Case Task Force collaborated with the sheriff’s office to identify unknown human remains cases, including the Mom-In-The-Box case. Through DNA analysis, it was revealed that Francesca Jacobs was actually Linda Rae Jacobs, born in 1942, not 1955. The DNA analysis also confirmed that the woman in the box was her mother, Ida Florence Jacobs.

With these new developments, detectives were able to contact relatives of the women, including a previous husband who helped confirm their true identities and the strong lifelong bond between mother and daughter. The investigation determined that no foul play was involved in the death of Ida Florence Jacobs. However, the reasons behind Linda Rae Jacobs assuming a new name and keeping her mother’s body in a box under the kitchen table remain unknown.

The case continues to intrigue authorities, leaving unanswered questions about the motives and actions of Linda Rae Jacobs..
