A tragic accident occurred on Maryland’s Capital Beltway late Tuesday, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to nine others. According to Maryland State Police, the incident was caused by a vehicle traveling the wrong way.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a white Mercedes SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-270, heading towards the outer loop of I-495 in Montgomery County. The SUV collided with a Lexus and a Nissan Pathfinder, causing significant damage and injuries.

Five adults in the Lexus were injured and immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. In the Nissan, two adults and three children also sustained injuries. Unfortunately, the female driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The identity of the deceased woman is being withheld until her next of kin are notified. Meanwhile, the alleged wrong-way driver, identified as 23-year-old Jayleen Hannor from Macon, Georgia, fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police. Charges against Hannor are pending.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is currently leading the investigation into the cause of the accident. More details will be released as the investigation progresses.
