Officer Fernando DeSouza, a West Palm Beach police officer, tragically lost his life in a crash involving his cruiser in Boynton Beach. The 43-year-old officer served in the U.S. Army for seven years, bravely completing tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq. He dedicated almost 17 years of his life to the West Palm Beach police department.

DeSouza leaves behind a son, six siblings, and his parents. His family, including his nephew WPTV reporter Joel Lopez, is devastated by the loss. The Boynton Beach Police Department received a call about the crash at the intersection of Hypoluxo Road and Lawrence Road around 2:30 a.m.

According to investigators, the marked police vehicle crashed and caught fire, resulting in the officer’s death. Aerial footage from WPTV Chopper 5 captured the charred wreckage being towed away from the scene, along with a large utility pole on the ground.

The Boynton Beach Police Department expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and friends, as well as the West Palm Beach Police Department, during this difficult time. Positive identification of the driver is still pending and may take several days, according to West Palm Beach Police Department spokesperson Mike Jachles.
