VANDALIA — Dramatic body camera footage captures the heroic efforts of bystanders and emergency personnel as they rescue a man who crashed his car into a pond near Dayton International Airport. The incident occurred early Saturday morning, when two witnesses, Don and Cameron Da Cunha, were en route to the airport. Suddenly, the vehicle in front of them swerved and plunged into the pond. According to a crash report from the Vandalia police, the driver’s visibility was severely impaired by a sudden downpour, leading him to inadvertently veer into the water.

Without hesitation, Don leaped into the pond and swam to the driver’s window, while Cameron immediately called 911 and joined his father in the rescue effort. As they worked to free the trapped man, Cameron flagged down an officer who was on the scene. Body camera footage shows Cameron guiding the officer to the location of the submerged vehicle.

“The car went straight through. We had to pull him out. We gave him CPR,” Cameron can be heard telling the officer in the footage. Concerned about the driver’s condition, the officer asks if he was breathing. Cameron responds, “No, he was sinking. We had to drag him out.”

Don, grateful for the opportunity to be in the right place at the right time, expressed his relief over the successful rescue. The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

This heart-stopping incident serves as a testament to the bravery and quick thinking of these bystanders and the effectiveness of the emergency response team..
