The New York Mets have traded outfielder Mark Canha to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league pitcher Justin Jarvis, according to an announcement from the team. Canha, who was a key player during the Mets’ 101-win campaign in 2022, still had the third-highest on-base percentage among the team’s regulars this year. Brewers president of baseball operations, Matt Arnold, expressed excitement about Canha’s addition to the team, citing his offensive production and versatility. The Brewers, who have struggled with their offense this season, hope that Canha can help improve their performance. The Mets will cover Canha’s remaining salary for this year, while the Brewers will be responsible for the buyout of a 2024 option. This is the second trade deadline deal for the Brewers, who recently acquired first baseman Carlos Santana. The Mets have also made multiple trades, including sending Max Scherzer and David Robertson to other teams. Jeff Passan reported

The New York Mets Trade Outfielder Mark Canha to the Milwaukee Brewers

The New York Mets have made another move to reshape their disappointing 2023 team, announcing on Monday that they have traded outfielder Mark Canha to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league pitcher Justin Jarvis.

Canha, 34, played a vital role during the Mets’ 101-win campaign in 2022 and continued to be a strong contributor this year, boasting the third-highest on-base percentage among New York’s regular players. The Brewers are excited to welcome him to their team, recognizing his productivity and versatility on the field.

“He’s a guy that we’re excited to have,” said Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold. “He’s somebody that’s been a productive big league player now for a long time. Between what he’s done over the course of his career offensively and also with the ability to play multiple positions, he’s somebody that we think can help us here down the stretch.”

Canha is currently under a two-year, $26.5 million contract that is set to expire at the end of the season. While the Mets will cover his remaining salary for this year above the league minimum, the Brewers will be responsible for the buyout of a 2024 option. The Brewers pursued Canha in hopes of bolstering their offense, which has been a weakness throughout the season.

Despite having one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, the Brewers’ on-base percentage (OBP) ranks 25th in the league this season at .312. Canha’s arrival is expected to bring much-needed on-base skill to the team, as they currently trail the Cincinnati Reds by 1 1/2 games for first place in the National League Central and hold an NL wild-card slot.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell anticipates Canha will play a significant role in right field, with top prospect Sal Frelick shifting to center field. This will require some mixing and matching with the outfielders, and the designated hitter (DH) spot will also be in play, providing opportunities for players like Christian Yelich and Canha to contribute.

As part of the trade, the Mets will also receive minor league pitcher Justin Jarvis from the Brewers. Jarvis, 23, has shown promise at Double-A this season but struggled in his three starts since being promoted to Triple-A.

This trade is the second major move for the Brewers during the deadline season, following their acquisition of first baseman Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates. For the Mets, it is the latest in a series of trades that included sending right-hander Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers and closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Mets may still make additional moves. Players like right-hander Justin Verlander, outfielder Tommy Pham, left-hander Jose Quintana, and relievers Adam Ottavino and Brooks Raley are among those who could be on the move before the deadline.
