Body Found Inside Plastic Barrel at Malibu Beach

A man’s body was discovered inside a plastic barrel at Malibu Lagoon State Beach in California, after a lifeguard spotted the unusual item floating offshore, authorities announced. The body was found inside a 55-liter black drum, according to Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The identity of the man, who was described as a Black adult, has been determined, and homicide investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding his death.

Officials do not yet know how long the body had been in the container, but it did not appear to be significantly decomposed. Lieutenant Reynaga also stated that there were no indications of blood spatter or other signs of violence. The discovery was made after a state park maintenance worker first noticed the large drum floating in the lagoon on Sunday afternoon. The worker retrieved the barrel using a kayak but left it unopened on the shore. However, a high tide overnight caused the barrel to be swept back into the water.

The lifeguard retrieved the barrel from the lagoon on Monday morning and found a “non-responsive” person inside. Paramedics and deputies were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead on the beach. It is unclear how long the container had been floating in the lagoon before it was first retrieved, but several calls were made to the sheriff’s department reporting its presence over the weekend.

The beach will remain open, with the exception of the crime scene, according to California State Parks spokesperson Jorge Moreno.
