North San Juan Man Arrested for Murder in Nevada City

Nevada City, CA – Anthony Eric Stewart, a 72-year-old resident of North San Juan, was apprehended by detectives from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Major Crimes Unit (MCU) on the afternoon of July 30, 2023. This arrest follows an intense investigation into a homicide that occurred over the weekend.

On Saturday, July 29, 2023, at approximately 11:24 pm, NCSO received a call from a concerned passerby. The individual reported the discovery of a lifeless body near a vehicle on the side of Tyler Foote Crossing Road and Black Sands Mine Road in Nevada City. Deputies promptly arrived at the scene, where they found a deceased 61-year-old man from Nevada City. The victim’s identity has yet to be released pending notification of his next of kin. The victim’s vehicle displayed evident exterior damage.

Upon realizing the suspicious nature of the death, detectives initiated an investigation, which eventually led to the identification of Anthony Eric Stewart as the prime suspect. Stewart was taken into custody on Sunday and is currently being held without bail at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility, facing a charge of murder.
