Deadly Crash on I-65 in Lake County Claims Life of Wheatfield Woman

The Indiana State Police are currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred on I-65 southbound in Lake County, resulting in the death of a Wheatfield woman. According to the authorities, the incident took place on Sunday morning, shortly after 10 a.m., on the southbound exit ramp to 61st Avenue.

Preliminary reports suggest that a Honda was traveling at a high speed in the far-left lane, heading south. The driver suddenly decided to exit the interstate onto 61st Avenue, leading to a collision with the back of a stationary semi-truck in the “gore area,” which is the paved portion of the shoulder between the ramp and the interstate.

The impact caused severe damage to the driver’s side of the Honda, resulting in the immediate death of the female driver, identified as 37-year-old Jennifer R. Benton, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. A passenger in the vehicle managed to exit and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fortunately, the driver of the semi-truck was unharmed in the accident and pulled over to secure a portion of the load that had come loose. The Indiana State Police’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Division conducted a level 2 inspection on the truck, as is customary in fatal crashes.

The investigation is still ongoing, and toxicology results are pending an autopsy by the coroner. The Indiana State Police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
