Man Shot and Killed by Deputies in Diamond Bar Neighborhood

A 30-year-old man was fatally shot by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies in a Diamond Bar neighborhood in June. The incident, captured on body-worn camera footage, shows that the man disregarded authorities’ orders to surrender and even threatened a nearby motorist before he was shot.

The incident began when authorities received multiple calls about a man named Benjamin Chin. Chin, wearing a ballistic vest and armed with a rifle, was seen walking along Crooked Creek Drive, firing shots. Prior to that, he had stabbed his mother in the back outside their home.

Chin fired several shots before deputies arrived at the scene. His mother followed him, pleading with him to drop the rifle. She approached the deputies, covered in blood from the stab wound, and begged them not to kill her son.

Despite orders to surrender, Chin continued walking onto Diamond Bar Boulevard. A driver in a Tesla was forced to stop as two patrol cars blocked the lanes. Chin advanced towards the Tesla, with authorities ordering him to drop the rifle. However, he ignored their commands. As a result, at least two deputies shot and struck him.

Chin was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Investigators determined that the rifle he was carrying was a ghost gun, an unserialized weapon that can be manufactured by users.

The incident is under investigation, and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for an independent review to determine the justification for the use of force.
