A police officer from the Groves Police Department has been placed on administrative leave following a fatal shooting incident. The officer’s identity has not been disclosed at this time. Chief Deputy Kirk Rice confirmed that the officer will undergo an evaluation this week, emphasizing that placing an officer on paid administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting is standard protocol.

The incident occurred last week when authorities responded to a call reporting an individual exhibiting erratic behavior and in possession of a handgun. Rice stated that four officers were present at the scene, with only one firing the fatal shot. The three other officers remain on active duty.

The altercation took place on Thursday around 2 p.m. in the 2800 block of Main Avenue. Upon arrival, law enforcement encountered the individual brandishing a weapon, resulting in the officers shooting him. The man, later identified as David Guilbeau, a 60-year-old resident of Groves, was transported to The Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been ordered by Justice of the Peace Joseph Guillory II, and the case is currently being investigated by the Texas Rangers, a division of the Texas Department of Public Safety. As of Monday, the case has not been submitted to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review.
