Shootout at Durham County Gas Station Involving SUV with Four Children Inside

DURHAM, N.C. – A chaotic scene unfolded at a gas station in Durham County on Friday night as occupants of an SUV engaged in a shootout with individuals in a sedan. According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, four children were inside the SUV during the incident.

The shootout prompted a high-speed chase involving the SUV, which eventually crashed a few miles away, as reported in a news release. The incident began when a deputy patrolling the area of N.C. 98 and Mineral Springs Road heard gunfire around 8:30 p.m. The gunshots originated from the Family Circus Gas Station on Mineral Springs Road.

At the time, the SUV, occupied by eight individuals, including four juveniles, was stopped at the gas station for refueling. Suddenly, a sedan pulled up, and for reasons unknown, shots were exchanged between the two vehicles, leading to a chaotic scene.

By the time the deputy arrived at the gas station, both the red SUV and the black sedan had fled the scene. However, another deputy spotted the speeding SUV and attempted to stop the driver. Unfortunately, the driver refused to comply and crashed at the intersection of Carpenter’s Fletcher and Redwood roads, approximately 3.5 miles away from the gas station.

Upon investigating the crash, deputies discovered several shell casings, a small quantity of drugs, and a handgun inside the SUV. Shell casings were also found at the gas station. Thankfully, no injuries were reported from the crash or the shootout.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 19-year-old Jaden Carranza from Benson, was charged with fleeing to elude arrest. Initially held on a $7,500 secured bond, the bond was later reduced to $3,500. Carranza remains in custody at the Durham County Detention Center.

Another individual, 21-year-old Isaiah Powell from Durham, was a passenger in the SUV. He was found to have arrest warrants and was subsequently arrested. However, Powell was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond on Monday.

The occupants of the black sedan involved in the shootout have not yet been identified. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
