Tragic Wrong-Way Freeway Crash Claims the Life of a Loving Father of Six in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — The family of the man killed on Wednesday in a wrong-way freeway crash has identified him as Abel Bermudez Griego, a 57-year-old Los Angeles resident and devoted father of six. Griego was traveling southbound on Interstate 805 near Camino De La Plaza when a head-on collision occurred with an Audi sedan. Griego was on his way to Ensenada to see his mother and pick up his daughter for a weekend trip. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead.

Jorge Benitez, the victim’s son, expressed his devastation over the loss of his father. Griego was known as a caring and selfless individual who always looked out for others. He worked as a union interior construction worker in the City of La Puente, Los Angeles County, and was the sole provider for his mother and youngest sister.

The driver of the Audi sedan, identified as 29-year-old Fernando Goneortiz, was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He has been arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Goneortiz is currently hospitalized with major, but non-life-threatening injuries.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Griego’s family with their expenses during this difficult time. The crash resulted in the closure of several lanes on southbound I-805 for several hours. The incident remains under investigation.

In light of this tragedy, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is urging drivers to be aware of an alternative option to turn back into the U.S. if they happen to miss the last U.S. exit. CHP Sgt. Hope Maxon advises drivers to continue off to the left and follow the signs for a U-turn back into the U.S.A. Additionally, drivers are encouraged to stay in the middle lanes as wrong-way drivers tend to be found in the fast lane, slow lane, or shoulders.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder for all drivers to exercise caution on the roads and remain vigilant against intoxicated or wrong-way drivers..
