Suspect Arraigned in Deadly shooting Case in Springfield

A suspect involved in a deadly shooting in June was arraigned on Monday in Springfield District Court. Michel Perez-Cruz, a 23-year-old individual, pleaded not guilty to murder charges and will be held without bail. The arrest of Perez-Cruz is in connection with the murder of Shawn Delgado, which occurred on June 19th on the 600 block of State Street in Springfield.

The incident took place around 5:00 p.m. when officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation on State Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Shawn Delgado, who had suffered gunshot wounds. Delgado was later pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center.

Initially, Perez-Cruz was arrested by the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit on firearms and drug charges. However, he was later charged with murder. The case is being jointly investigated by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit and the Hamden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.

This is not the first time Perez-Cruz has been in trouble with the law. He was previously arrested on firearms charges in 2022 and was also apprehended for riding a dirt bike illegally in the city, along with drug charges. At the time of his most recent arrest, Perez-Cruz was out on bail.

Perez-Cruz was one of eleven individuals arrested in a recent crime crackdown by the Springfield Police. The case continues to develop as investigators gather more evidence.
