Man Killed in Multiple-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 95 in Topsfield
Valkisergio Costa Silva, a 44-year-old man from Barnstable, was tragically killed in a multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Topsfield. The incident also led to the arrest of one person and an ongoing police pursuit for another individual.
The crash occurred when two men from Lynn, traveling south in a 2008 GMC Acadia SUV, suddenly decelerated and came to a stop near mile marker 71. A 52-year-old man from Peabody, driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala behind them, attempted to avoid hitting the stopped SUV by braking and veering left. Unfortunately, the Impala collided with a 2006 Chevrolet Express Van, in which Costa Silva was a passenger.
The impact caused the van to leave the roadway, slide across the grass median, and roll over. Costa Silva and another passenger were ejected from the vehicle. Tragically, Costa Silva died at the scene, while the other passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Boston Medical Center.
The driver of the van and the driver of the Impala sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The driver of the Acadia and another passenger fled the scene and are currently being sought by authorities.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the affected lanes on the highway were closed for several hours as emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene.
