On July 26, 2023, at 6:26 AM +07, Jillian Frankel and Alex Tabet reported that the Iowa Supreme Court has agreed to hear the appeal of Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds regarding the state’s ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Reynolds signed the ban into law earlier this month after it was passed by Republican legislators during a special session. The signing took place at the Family Leadership Summit, a significant event for social conservatives in Iowa. The law, which went into effect immediately, was later temporarily blocked by a Polk County judge following legal challenges from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa. The ban remains on hold, and abortion is currently legal in Iowa until the 20th week of pregnancy. Reynolds previously signed a similar six-week ban in 2018, which was permanently blocked by the state Supreme Court after the Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade. Reynolds and Iowa Republicans are determined to enforce a stricter ban on abortion and will defend the new law before the Iowa Supreme Court.
