Man Arrested for Allegedly Stabbing Woman to Death in San Mateo
A tragic incident unfolded in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday, as a man reportedly stabbed a woman to death in San Mateo. Shockingly, the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Mark Mechikoff, filmed the gruesome act and shared it on Facebook. The disturbing footage ultimately assisted the police in locating Mechikoff, who was apprehended about 30 miles south of the crime scene at a San Mateo apartment complex.
While the motive behind the stabbing is still being investigated, San Mateo police stated, “We do know Mechikoff mercilessly filmed the last moments of the victim’s life and posted the video to Facebook, then fled the area.”
The victim has been identified as Claribel Estrella, and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office has charged Mechikoff with murder. The charges include enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury and the use of a knife.
Mechikoff appeared in court but did not enter a plea. The arraignment has been postponed for a week to allow for the selection of his court-appointed attorney, according to District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe.
Although Mechikoff and the victim were known to each other, the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear. The motive for the crime is still under investigation, emphasized the district attorney.
The Nye County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada first received a report about the stabbing after a caller had seen the video on Facebook. By tracing the phone number associated with the Facebook page, the sheriff’s office located Mechikoff at a large San Mateo apartment complex. Although the video has since been taken down, it was confirmed to be Mechikoff’s cellphone and Facebook page.
Following a thorough search of the San Mateo apartment complex, authorities discovered Estrella’s body nearly three hours later in one of the units. Two hours after the discovery, Mechikoff was apprehended in San Jose.
