Authorities in San Mateo, California, have arrested a man named Mark Mechikoff, 39, after he allegedly stabbed a woman to death and live-streamed the horrifying act on Facebook. The chilling video aided the police in locating the suspect, who was apprehended approximately 30 miles away from the crime scene in a San Mateo apartment complex.

While the motive behind the stabbing is still under investigation, San Mateo police stated that Mechikoff callously filmed the victim’s final moments and shared the footage on Facebook before fleeing the area.

The victim, identified as Claribel Estrella, was brutally attacked, leading the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office to charge Mechikoff with murder, along with additional charges for inflicting severe bodily harm and using a knife during the crime.

Mechikoff’s arraignment is scheduled for Friday afternoon, during which an attorney will be assigned to represent him, according to DA Stephen Wagstaffe.

San Mateo police have redirected inquiries regarding the Facebook page where Mechikoff shared the video and whether it has been removed to the District Attorney’s office, which has yet to respond.

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada received the initial report of the stabbing after a concerned individual spotted the video on Facebook. Through a phone number associated with the account, the sheriff’s office traced it to a large apartment complex in San Mateo, where officers conducted a door-to-door investigation. Nearly three hours later, they discovered Estrella’s lifeless body inside one of the units. While Mechikoff was acquainted with the victim, authorities have not disclosed the nature of their relationship.

Two hours after the gruesome incident, Mechikoff was apprehended in San Jose on suspicion of homicide.
