MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A convict who had escaped from a minimum-security transitional housing unit in New Hampshire was shot dead by a Florida police officer after he brandished a knife and threatened two women, authorities reported.

Darien Young, 29, was killed by a Miami Beach police officer at a Victoria’s Secret store on Lincoln Road. Young, who had been suspected of shoplifting, took a woman and her daughter hostage at around 5:30 p.m. EDT, according to WPLG-TV.

Young was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries, while the two women emerged unharmed, as per WTVJ.

According to a news release by the New Hampshire Department of Corrections, Young had managed to escape from the Calumet Transitional Housing Unit in Manchester on July 21.

The agency revealed that Young had been imprisoned in New Hampshire after being found guilty of receiving stolen property, burglary, falsifying physical evidence, and drug charges. Prison officials stated that he was eligible for “minimum parole” starting Monday.

New Hampshire officials confirmed that Young had a maximum release date of January 31, 2028.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is conducting an investigation into the shooting. The police officer who discharged his firearm, resulting in Young’s death, has been placed on administrative leave, following standard procedure, as stated by WPLG.

The FDLE stated that their agents and analysts will establish a timeline, interview officers and witnesses, and review any available video footage, including surveillance footage, body-worn camera recordings, and cell phone videos. The scope of their investigation is solely focused on the shooting incident..
