On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, a shootout took place in Tualatin when law enforcement officers attempted to serve an eviction notice. The incident unfolded around 9:30 am at Forest Rim Apartments in Tualatin when deputies from the Washington County Sherriff’s office arrived to serve the notice. However, at approximately 10:20 am, a man inside the apartment opened fire and shot a sheriff’s deputy multiple times.

The situation quickly escalated into an active crime scene, prompting officers from multiple police departments to converge at the location to provide assistance and support.

The incident took place at Timbers Apartments, adjacent to the Nyberg Woods Shopping Center. Upon their arrival, Tualatin deputies attempted to enter the apartment. In response, the assailant inside the apartment opened fire, causing the wounded deputy and two other officers to become trapped on the second-floor balcony of the building. Authorities have stated that at least one deputy returned fire.

In order to handle the situation, officers from Tualatin, Tigard, Sherwood, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Portland, and Port of Portland police departments were dispatched to the scene. The apartment complex was surrounded, and residents were instructed to seek shelter.

To aid in the search for the suspect, a drone was deployed, and a command post was set up near the shopping center. During the incident, nearby shops reportedly went into lockdown.

Tualatin Fire and Rescue, as well as an ambulance, were also present at the scene. Eventually, law enforcement focused their attention on a second-story apartment in the southern end of the complex, where the suspect was later found deceased.

According to KOIN 6, the injured deputy has been identified as Charles Dozé, while the deceased assailant has been identified as 34-year-old Kristafer James Graves.

Following Deputy Dozé’s hospitalization, Sheriff Pat Garrett expressed his gratitude to Legacy Emanuel Hospital for their efforts to save the deputy’s life:

“I’m sincerely grateful for the medical staff here at Legacy Emanuel Hospital for doing everything they can do right now to get our deputy through this very difficult period,” he said.
