Authorities have identified the driver who tragically lost their life in a fatal crash that occurred overnight on Interstate 70 in St. Charles. The incident resulted in a complete shutdown of the highway for several hours.

The deceased driver has been identified as James Melton, a resident of Wentzville.

The collision took place around 12:30 a.m. on Friday near Zumbehl Road. This area is known for heavy traffic congestion and ongoing construction work, with numerous lane closures and construction cones due to a Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) project at the Zumbehl overpass. MoDOT had deployed crews to install girders over I-70 until 5:30 a.m.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver of the semi-truck came to a stop due to traffic congestion in the construction zone. Footage from MoDOT cameras captured the pickup truck bursting into flames shortly after the crash. Tragically, the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
