Diver Struck by Miami-Dade Police Boat Identified as Former Obama Administration Member’s Husband

A diver who was hospitalized after being involved in a collision with a Miami-Dade Police Department boat has been identified as James Ramsay Covey, 39, of Coral Gables. Covey, who happens to be the husband of Francesca Lopez Covey, a former member of the Obama administration, sustained injuries during the incident that occurred offshore of Boca Chita Key on Wednesday afternoon.

The collision took place when the police boat was leaving a safety stop and its engine accidentally struck Covey. He was subsequently airlifted to Jackson Hospital South for treatment of his injuries. The exact condition of Covey remains unknown at this time.

Radio scanner transmissions captured portions of the rescue operation, revealing the extent of Covey’s injuries. One caller reported, “Approximately 40-years-old. He’s got a laceration to his right heel, his right arm, and to his buttocks.” Another caller requested an air rescue, stating, “He was going to Boca Chita and it was a propeller hit. We’re going to need an air rescue too.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are currently investigating the incident. More details regarding the circumstances surrounding the collision have yet to be released.
