An arrest has been made in connection with the murder of Shawn Delgado on State Street in Springfield. Michel Perez-Cruz, a 23-year-old resident of Renee Circle in Springfield, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including murder, firearm assault, and drug possession.

The incident occurred on June 19th, when officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation on the 600 block of State Street. They discovered Shawn Delgado, an adult male, with gunshot wounds. Delgado was later pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center.

Perez-Cruz was apprehended by the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit on Friday on firearms and drug charges. The Homicide Unit then charged him with murder. This joint investigation involves the Springfield Police Homicide Unit and the Hamden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.

This is not Perez-Cruz’s first encounter with law enforcement. He was previously arrested in 2022 on firearms charges and more recently for illegally riding a dirt bike in the city, along with drug charges. Despite these previous arrests, Perez-Cruz was out on bail at the time of the murder.

Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood commended the collaborative efforts of the various police units involved in the arrest. She also highlighted the proactive measures taken by the Firearms Investigation Unit, which have contributed to a decrease in shooting incidents in July.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno expressed his gratitude to the police department and emphasized the importance of holding violent offenders accountable. He called for stronger action by the courts and judges to prevent the release of repeat offenders on low or no bail.

The arrest of Michel Perez-Cruz is a significant step towards justice for Shawn Delgado’s murder. The Springfield community and law enforcement will continue to work together to remove violent criminals from the streets and ensure the safety of residents..
