The three Marines, all lance corporals, were discovered at a Speedway gas station, which is about 40 minutes away from Camp Lejeune. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of their deaths.
According to reports, foul play is not suspected in this case. The Marines were found after deputies from the Pender County Sheriff’s Office responded to a missing persons call. One of the Marines in the car was the person who had been reported missing. Sgt. Chester Ward of the Pender County Sheriff’s Department stated that there is no reason to believe foul play was involved, and they are waiting for an autopsy report.
The Defense Department has not publicly announced the deaths, but the Marines’ families have been notified by U.S. military casualty assistance officers. Friends and family of the deceased Marines have been posting messages of shock and love on social media.
No drugs were found in the vehicle, according to Sgt. Ward. The three Marines have been identified as Tanner Kaltenberg, 19, of Madison, Wisconsin; Merax Cockery, 23, of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma; and Ivan Garcia, 23, of Naples, Florida.
