The tragic incident that took place in Lehigh Acres, Florida, on June 14, 2023, has shocked the community. Yohani Gonzalez de Lazaro, a 45-year-old man, stands accused of killing a mother and one of her adult children during a rampage at their family home. During his arraignment, Gonzalez de Lazaro pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to authorities, the shooting may have been prompted by a civil case involving the ownership of the property where the incident occurred. Gonzalez de Lazaro allegedly attempted to claim ownership of the parcel registered to Danae Velazquez Alvarez, who was also shot in the face but survived.

The victims have been identified as mother Eugenia Veronica Alvarez and her son, Josue Vega Alvarez. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the family, and it has already raised over $17,400 towards its $50,000 goal.

The suspect arrived at the residence wearing a ski mask and started an altercation with a woman inside before opening fire. Fortunately, another man in the house was able to contain Gonzalez de Lazaro while a woman called the authorities.

Gonzalez de Lazaro remains in custody at the Lee County Jail without bond on two second-degree murder charges, as well as two attempted second-degree murder counts. He had initially been held in Miami-Dade County before being transferred.

The case is still ongoing, with Gonzalez de Lazaro scheduled for a case management conference on September 12. The civil case, which was supposed to have a motions hearing on August 14, has been postponed.

This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing conflicts through peaceful means and seeking legal recourse rather than resorting to violence. The community has come together to support the victims’ family in their time of grief, demonstrating the power of unity and compassion..
