A suspect has been arraigned in connection with the shooting of New Bedford police detective Lavar Gilbert. According to Assistant District Attorney Shawn Guilderson, the shooting is linked to a fatal shooting that occurred on July 3 in New Bedford. Cheybane Vasconcelos-Furtado, 20, was at a roadside memorial for his cousin before driving to the scene of Gilbert’s shooting. Vasconcelos-Furtado is facing multiple charges, including armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery, and carrying an illegal firearm.
Guilderson stated that surveillance videos captured Vasconcelos-Furtado driving a white Honda Accord, along with several other individuals and two other cars, to the location where Gilbert was shot. The vehicles were seen traveling in a coordinated and synchronized manner. Video footage also showed multiple muzzle flashes from the rear of the Accord at the scene of Gilbert’s shooting. The Accord was later found dumped in Rhode Island after the license plates were removed.

Vasconcelos-Furtado was identified as the driver of the Accord through witness evidence, fingerprints, and surveillance videos. He was also caught on video leaving his home in the Accord on the day of the shooting. Judge Joseph Harrington ordered Vasconcelos-Furtado to be held without bail, and his bail was also revoked on two open cases, with his probation being revoked in a separate matter. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for August 25.
New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira and about 20 police officers attended the arraignment. Oliveira mentioned that the investigation is ongoing and involves cooperation between city, state, and federal law enforcement officials. Gilbert, who was shot in the face, has returned home and is recovering. Police have stated that Gilbert was not targeted, and the shooting does not appear to be related to the neighborhood..
