A tragic pursuit of an allegedly stolen truck ended in a fatal crash on U.S. 41 near Oaktown, Indiana. The incident began when Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies received information about a stolen 1997 Dodge Dakota from Vigo County traveling south on U.S. 41. Despite attempts to stop the truck, the driver refused to comply and continued south, eventually entering Knox County where the pursuit came to a devastating end.
According to the preliminary crash investigation, all three juvenile passengers in the stolen vehicle were reported missing from Vigo and Owen counties. The 16-year-old male driver was approaching Old U.S. 41 at Oaktown when he attempted to make a right turn onto the road. However, he collided with a 2006 Chevrolet Impala that was stopped at a stop sign. The driver of the Impala, identified as 88-year-old James Mayall of Oaktown, was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis but tragically succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the stolen truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital before being transported to Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village in Vincennes. A 16-year-old female passenger from Poland also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital before being transported to Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village. A 15-year-old male passenger from Terre Haute was airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, and his current condition is unknown.
This incident is currently under investigation, and criminal charges are pending.
