The body of Chuck Gilbert Shelton Jr., 38, was discovered in Lake Cunningham on Sunday afternoon, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Shelton had jumped into the lake while deputies were serving a warrant at the residence where he was located.
Deputies had arrived at 964 River Road to serve a warrant for Shelton’s Failure to Appear in court. However, for reasons unknown, Shelton ran from the residence and jumped into the lake. Despite efforts by deputies to locate him, Shelton swam a short distance before going under water and did not resurface.

The Greenville County emergency rescue dive team was called in to search for Shelton, and he was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing Shelton entering the lake near River Road in Greer, and he was last seen above water approximately 15-20 feet from a dock near Lake Cunningham Road.
The coroner determined that Shelton’s cause of death was freshwater drowning, and his death has been ruled an accident. However, the case remains under investigation by the coroner’s office.
