The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed near Winton Park on July 19, 2023, as 69-year-old James Buford of Sanger. Buford was contracted by Fresno County to work as a camp host at Winton Park.

The incident occurred when a utility worker discovered Buford’s injured body around 10:30 p.m. near Piedra and Elwood roads, south of Winton Park. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Buford later succumbed to his injuries at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

Buford was one of 13 custodian caretakers contracted by Fresno County, responsible for providing services and on-site security at seven county parks. The motive for the killing remains unknown, and detectives have not yet identified any suspects.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the homicide, and anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Detective Rudy Tafoya at 559-600-8207. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Valley Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867, and a reward may be offered for information leading to the resolution of the case.
