The Tampa Police Department has released dramatic video footage of a shootout between officers and an armed suspect. The incident occurred following a high-speed chase on North Florida Avenue. The suspect, later identified as Michael Bresnahan, was killed during the shootout.
Prior to the chase and shootout, Bresnahan had stabbed the mother of his children 13 times. Police spotted his vehicle near Dale Mabry Highway and Spruce Street in Tampa. Bresnahan pointed an AK-47 at officers and attempted to flee, leading them on a dangerous pursuit.
The released video shows Bresnahan driving erratically on multiple busy roads, crashing through fences, and avoiding stop sticks. Eventually, he crashes into another car on Florida Avenue. Immediately after the crash, shots were fired from Bresnahan’s vehicle. In response, 18 Tampa Police Department officers fired their weapons.
Authorities believe Bresnahan posed a threat to the community and other police officers, which led to the officers firing their weapons. It appears Bresnahan died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but final autopsy results are pending.
The woman who was stabbed by Bresnahan remains in the hospital in stable condition. Meanwhile, all of the officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an investigation.
