A tragic car crash in Edgar County, Illinois has claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy from rural Vermilion County. The incident occurred on Illinois Route 1 near County Road 1700 North, between Paris and Chrisman. Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the crash was reported at 8:30 a.m.
According to witness statements and evidence at the scene, the 17-year-old driver, identified as Andrew L. Riza of Ridge Farm, was traveling northbound on Route 1 when he crossed the center line and collided with another truck driven by Tony Cesinger of Terre Haute, Indiana. Riza’s truck veered off the road and came to a stop in a roadside ditch, while Cesinger’s truck continued south before also coming to a stop in a ditch. Fortunately, Cesinger only suffered minor injuries and was able to call 911 to report the crash.

The Edgar County Coroner, Scott Barrett, arrived at the scene and pronounced Riza dead. The road was closed for approximately five hours as emergency personnel attended to the situation and the Illinois State Police conducted an investigation. Route 1 was reopened at 1:45 p.m.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation by the State Police, the Edgar County Sheriff’s Department, and Barrett’s office.
