On Monday evening, Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Battalion Chief Tobias Jones confirmed the devastating news that Firefighter Jordan Melton had passed away from his injuries. Melton was one of two firefighters who were shot last Wednesday morning at Fire Station No. 9 in the Norwood neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama.

Firefighter Melton’s death has left the community and the fire department in shock and mourning. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed his condolences and shared a heartfelt statement on Facebook, describing Melton as a vibrant young brother who was full of life. Woodfin highlighted Melton’s love for sports, good barbecue, and his brilliant mind for business. He also mentioned Melton’s close relationship with his mother, who has been his rock during these difficult past few days.

Melton had been working for the fire department for over a year and had recently graduated from the recruit academy just a month ago. Woodfin expressed his sadness that Melton’s potential and pride will now go unrealized.

The other firefighter who was shot, Jamal Jones, is still in the hospital, and his current condition is unknown. Both Melton and Jones had undergone surgery after sustaining gunshot wounds, and it was initially expected that they would recover.

Authorities are still searching for suspects in this targeted attack on the fire station. It is highly unusual for a fire station to be targeted in such a manner, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
